The Indian Railways has set a new record for freight business output in the financial year 2022-23, with a 7% increase in freight loading compared to the previous year. The freight transport unit of the Indian railways also grew by 10% to reach 903 billion NTKMs in FY 2022-23. The railways achieved an incremental loading of 74.6 MT in coal, followed by 8.7 MT in balance of other goods, 5.6 MT in cement and clinkers, 7.1 MT in fertilizers, 5 MT in containers, and 4 MT in POL. Additionally, the performance of Indian Railways excelled in passenger transport, with the number of passengers using the service increasing by more than 80% compared to last year. As a result, the gross freight and passenger revenues of Indian Railways are expected to exceed Rs 2.2 lakh crore.
